The only way this particular virus infects via E-mail, is if the attached document contain an AutoOpen macro, which executes automatically when the document is opened. The DIRECTORY file had no such thing inside.

If you want to check the status of your own M$ WinWord, check TOOLS/MACRO - if this box don't contain a macro called AutoOpen + some weird stuff like XXYZZZ or similar - you're not infected.
If you're infected - you're infected from another source.
