I saw something on The Learning Channel last month about the Sphinx.
Apparently much of the erosion on the Sphinx's body is water erosion,
not sand erosion, and the last time it rained regularly there was around
10,000 BC, at the end of the last ice age.  They theorized that the
Sphinx was originally just a lion carved out of a solid rock by the
ancient people there, and that the Egyptians modified the head at a
later date to fit their mythology.
