That is a hard one. The Dead have gone in such a diverse number of
directions over the years. I had a conversation with a woman taking a
class here about the Dead once. She said she didn't like that "hard rock
psychidelic stuff", she liked country music, like what I was playing at
the time. ( The GD "Bears Choice" album ;-}

I'd start with either some of the "eariler" albums (pre '85) or better
yet some recordings of live concerts. The Dead are one of the very few
bands that encourage people to record their concerts. (The even sell
special tickets to the "taping section" so thos recording are in optimal
position to do so.)

Lots of people all around the world trade live GD concert tapes.
