Noel Redding was the first guy I ever heard of using the Hagstrom
8-string.  It's sort of tuned like a 12-string gtr, in that the bass
strings are octave tuned and the treble are unison on a guitar.  The hagstrom, I
believe, is octave tuned, all 4 courses.  The Hamer 12 string bass
used by Peterson [or is it Petersson?]...I can't remember, though I
saw and heard it last year.  I can't believe that any instrument with
a wooden neck could hold more than 1 set of true bass strings...
