It probably strained plankton.  The artist's impression notwithstanding, _C.
erectus_ was actually an aquatic dinosaur.  The body rested on the sea-bed,
and the head floated.  Hence that neck, which is many hundreds of metres long,
judging by the spaceship.

At least, that's the only way I can see the bloody thing working! :)  I never
liked that cover.
