OFF: Stonehenge Who Knows?

I'm surprised that none of the UK listmembers have mentioned this yet ...

Yesterday, the US papers (San Francisco Chronicle, to be precise) reported
that for the first time since the BlueRinseHaggardRobot ... erm Thatcher
that is ... administration, the Druids have been permitted to hold Solstice
rituals at Stonehenge. Although the article briefly alluded to the reasons
why the Stones had been declared off-limits for so long, no mention
whatsoever was made of what happened there in 1985, the first year that
access was prohibited. I vividly remember receiving the press-cuttings
package from Brian Tawn with all the articles about the Battle of the
Stones, and seeing even the most conservative, rabidly Thatcherite, papers
stating that perhaps the police force had been a bit excessive. Even in
retrospect, over a decade later, I'd put that event up there with Tiannamen
Square, the Russian coup, this year's Indonesian riots, etc. as one of the
more disturbing mass-demonstration events of recent history.

I guess this means that for all his shortcomings, John Major is still
something of an improvement over the previous government. Nice to have
some good news every once and a while ...
