Metallica SUCKS!

My goodness, I never thought we'd have a "... SUCKS!" thread on boc-l.

Metallica achieved a remarkable, and unsustainable, level of popular acclaim
combined with street credibility.  Stands to reason it couldn't go on
forever, but it hardly means they "SUCK!" just because you don't care for
them any more; surely noone wants them still banging out "Ride the
Lightning" again and again?  So they either stick with the same formula,
which is boring, or they change it and risk alienating fans.  They can't
win.  I hardly think they've sold out, when they've been guilty of some
dreadfully uncommercial moves (wearing makeup, ditching their logo, an album
of covers by 70s acts, Hetfield's alt-country tendencies, a fucking
*orchestral* album!, etc).  Lars is given to pretension, but he always has
been.  Heavy metal drummer in articulacy shock.

Anyway, I suspect there's more than meets the eye to the Napster suit.  It
needed a heavyweight act to bring a case, even though the likes of Metallica
are more able to afford the loss.  That black-rucksack outfit Steve
mentioned, they're the kind of people Napster hurts, but they wouldn't have
the money or the profile to bring the case.
