Yeah, it was a pretty cool day out.
Spacehead opened proceedings with a pretty tight set, somewhat let down by
the mix, which included covers of Blue Skin and Aerospacaeage Inferno.
Next up Harvey gave us a nice selection of ambient noodlings, including Free
Fall and Mutation Zone. The latter featuring a quality ad-libbed rant. The
highlight of this set was the finale, with Nik on sax, of a more Alman
Mulo-esque piece.
Bedouin's set was not one of their finest, but enjoyable nontheless. The
crowd were perhaps a little too passive at this point. Nik took the stage
again for the encore, laying down some sax to LSD.
The between band slots were filled music and videos of the Hawks and the
answers to a pretty tricky HW quiz.
The main event: The Night of the Hawks or the Hawkwind All-Stars - no-one
seemed to know quite how to introduce them. Opening with Ghost Dance,
slightly shakily at first, but building up nicely, they followed with a
selection of HW and a few ICU songs including: Watching the Grass Grow,
Coded Languages, Dyings Seas, The Right Stuff, Ejection, Raj Neesh, Sonic
Attack, Lord of Light and climaxing with, what else, Brainstorm. Everyone
gave what you'd expect, some great drumming from Danny, pounding base from
Alan, some top wooshy-swirly synth from Harvey, some fiery fretwork from the
Judge and Nik on ethereal flute and manic sax.
An excellent nights entertainment, aliitle rough around the edges, a few
fumbled changes here and there, but perhaps all the more exciting for it.
A great appetiser for Brixton's main course in a couple of weeks!

Nick
