My understanding is that getting too close to the sound barrier
(dunno about breaking it -- maybe?) was a common problem for US
pilots toward the end of the war. Apparently, you put a late-war P-51
into a dive from a sufficient height, keep the throttle open, and
after a while everything starts to shake and your controls won't
budge (well, not without some effort on the part of the people who
provided the reports I read, or they wouldn't have reported them).
But's been a _long_ time since I read the details.

P-47s are cooler, anyway :)
