The explanation of the long box phenomena i once heard was to adjust to the
size of the record bins still being used when record stores were on the
verge of transition -- the size of the bin. Not to mention the awkwardness
of the shape could be thought of as "detriment to shoplifting"

When i bought MC5's  kick out the jams  it was in a long box duplicating  a
section of the cover, spanlgy suits and all. f course i no longer have it.
