I believe it was the Kinks (or maybe the Who), who on their first US tour,
explained to the apparently-credulous interviewer that they had turned down
MBE medals on the grounds that those should not be given to bankers,
matrons and generals, but should rather be given EXCLUSIVELY to pop stars.
Only under those circumstances would they accept the title ...
