If you're not afraid to buy a guitar mail-order, you might want to check
out the "Jizzcaster" made by Subway Guitars in Berkeley CA (local for me):
http://www.fatdawg.com/newstock.html (about 1/3 of the way down the page, I
think) ... the Subway cheapo stuff is surprisingly well-made for the price -
 head & shoulders above mass-produced Korean Squiers & Epiphones (and it's
also a great used store - that's where I bought my first Rickenbacker
bass).  Most of them are made at least partially from geniune 60's "new old
stock" parts, and (as you can see on the website) you can get all sorts of
different pickup options etc., if you want.

And Ted, I've seen/played with plenty of guitarists with one (most notably
Eric Arn from Primordial Undermind), and they would ALL leave the tremelo
arm off ... now I know why!
