There is always The Subterranean  in E. village whcih specializes in garage rock and obscure indie and underground (I used to buy the early Monster Magnet (like EVIL EP and such) there, though they cater mostly to loser 'hip' crowd (like me at art school, dear god was I a really stoned Hawkwind and Mudhoney fan!)
