Indeed, but the odds are not so good with the gun if one is surprised.
Martial arts skills are much more handy.  My 7-year-old has been in karate class for a couple years now.  Even for her size and age, when she hits you, you _know_ you've been hit.  Come the teen years, the "worrying about boys" thing may take on a whole new meaning.
