That is brilliantly done, Mike. Thanks. It's too bad there was a need for
such a lyric change, well done.

With the sound of 1 hand clapping,

Mary

The Day the MP's Lied

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How the Party used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make the people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper they'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about the lords they bribed
But something touched me deep inside
The day the MP's lied

So bye-bye, to their slice of the pie.
They took their houses and expenses
Then let their tax payments slide
And then came the day when the Telegraph pried
Finding out they took us all for a ride
Finding that they took us all for a ride

Did you write the book of rules,
Do you believe they were just fooled
If the Speaker tells you so?
Do you believe their second homes
Need giant tellies and even bigger loans
And that they didn't know their debts were gone?

Well, I know that he's in league with you
because his couch is your couch too
You both claimed on the flat
And man you can't beat that

I was a lonely teenage kid that day
With a red carnation and a black beret
But there was nothing left to say
The day the MP's lied

So bye-bye, to their slice of the pie.
They took their houses and expenses
Thenlet their tax payments slide
And then came the day when the Telegraph pried
Finding out they took us all for a ride
Finding that they took us all for a ride

Now for twelve years over us they've ruled
Growing fatter on the stunts they've pulled
But that's not how it used to be.
When the man took cash from Formula One
And then when he was looking done
He asked for trust from you and me

Then while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The election was adjourned
No verdict was returned.
And while he spoke of moral rules
Backbenchers took us all for fools
Until Heather Brooke gave us the tools
The day the MP's lied

So bye-bye, to their slice of the pie.
They took their houses and expenses
Then let their tax payments slide
And then came the day when the Telegraph pried
Finding out they took us all for a ride
Finding that they took us all for a ride

On Question Time the air was blue
The audience was enraged anew
Accusations were denied
I laughed so hard I cried
When the Minister tried to lie again
Ming Campbell gave us all more spin
That change is coming from within
If we would just abide

And as I watched them on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan's spell.
But I enjoyed it all that night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the MP's lied

The minister tried to keep her post
Claiming for a cottage on the coast
The system was to blame
Drained tennis courts and a cleaner moat
That new duck house will bring out the vote
They learned excuses off by rote
The day the MP's lied

So bye-bye, to their slice of the pie.
They took their houses and expenses
Thenlet their tax payments slide
And then came the day when the Telegraph pried
Finding out they took us all for a ride
Finding that they took us all for a ride

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: Jack be nimble, Jane be quick!
Claim the radio and the telly and the candlestick
The fees office knew every trick
The day the MP's lied

And in the streets, the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was said
Democracy was dead
And all the men I most admired
Exposed as cheats and thieves and barefaced liars
I wished it all consumed by fire
The day the MP's lied

So bye-bye, to their slice of the pie.
They took their houses and expenses
Then let their tax payments slide
And then came the day when the Telegraph pried
Finding out they took us all for a ride
Finding that they took us all for a ride
