OK - I'll say it:  yes, it'll cost if you go use "direct means", but not so much if you peruse the likes of "Pirate Bay" and see what they have in the way of audible books and epub/mobi formats etc.

Yes, I'm a despicable human being for mentioning this obvious resource, but times are hard, and within that context, it's OK in my book to use torrent sites to sample various artists/authors - use it like a virtual "library" to find out that you like and what you don't. If you come across something good, then by all means consolidate that discovery with a legitimate purchase from an official source at a later date... 

For example, I didn't know I would like Jack Reacher as a character until I got hold of some of the "Audible" downloads and now I've actually laid out cash to buy some of the books... that's the way it goes....
