This is true.  Unfortunately the technology was flawed because the laser
tracked the whole groove - including all the crud at the bottom. A diamond
stylus actually only tracks the groove walls, being much larger than the
bottom of the pit, so is prone to less noise.  Maybe they've found a way to
do this with a laser now, though I have to say a good old fashioned
turntable with a good arm and cartridge still does the business, for me at
least.
