OFF: CD Player Advice Requested

I am planning on picking up a new CD player for the home as my current one
has given up the ghost.

The price range is under $300.  Any advice is appreciated.
What models/brands are good. Which are bad.
What functions are worthwhile, which are not.
What should I look for.
Horror stories you've had.
