So does this mean they have created a fake 5.1 surround sound mix  
from the already-mixed stereo masters instead of making a proper 5.1  
surround sound mix from scratch using the original multi-track master  
tapes?

It sounds like the former from what you've written. :-(

(Mind you, it would take a lot of creative input to achieve the latter.)
